The primary purposes of the Scholarship Fund. is to raise funds for scholarships to be awarded annually to one student from each of Newark’ six Public High Schools whose career objective is Public Safety. As importantly, the Scholarships will pay tribute to our Vulcan Members who have displayed true leadership, Courage and commitment to the core values of the Vulcan Pioneers of NJ.
In honor of these heroes the scholarship will be awarded to six matriculating students who are in good academic standing and exemplify humanitarian characteristics. Six scholarships (one per each Public High School) shall be awarded annually by the Vulcan Pioneers of NJ to help towards the student’s tuition.
A student must be a matriculating public high school senior in the Newark Public System aspiring to pursue a career in Public Safety
Maintain fulltime student status
Possess a Grade Point Average of 2.5 or better (On a Four Point System)
Provide evidence of volunteer or community service
Provide evidence of participation and or / leadership in school activities.

Qualified applicants shall complete and return the application form to the P.O. Box 937, Newark, NJ 07101 for review and endorsement. Students are required to submit the following items with their applications:
Return the completed application package by April 15th to the Guidance Office, to be considered for the upcoming school term. Students should carefully review the application package to ensure that all required materials are included.
The Vulcan Pioneers Scholarship Committee and the Schools Guidance Office shall review each application package carefully to ensure that the applicants have submitted required materials and meet the eligibility criteria. Once screened and accepted, the applicants will be rated using the following factors:

Student’s stated career and professional goals

Academic record at High School
3
Submission of an essay
(Not to exceed 500 words)
The Vulcan Pioneers Scholarship Committee will use a rating system with 5 as the highest value and 1 as the lowest value to score each eligibility category. Members of the Scholarship Committee will calculate the average score for each applicant and rank the applicants accordingly. The individual applicant’s score sheets and the combined rank order score sheet shall be reviewed for consideration
Scholarship recipient will be notified in writing of award no later than May 15th , and parent(s) of scholarship recipient will also be notified not later than May 15th of academic year.
To be considered for scholarship students must adhere to the following application requirements:

Submit a cover letter introducing self to the Vulcan Pioneers Scholarship Committee, outlining the request for scholarship support.

Complete and sign the application form and return it to the P.O. Box 937, Newark, NJ 07101 by the submission date. Late applications will not be accepted for support consideration.

Attach essay (not to exceed 500 words) describing career goals and how the scholarship support will help to reach goals.

Include a letter of recommendation; from a faculty member, a community or church leader or a mentor. Note: Letters from family members will not be not accepted.
