Our Story

The late 1950s marked the early stages of the Civil Rights Movement. Founded in 1957 due to the social and professional challenges of the time. A group of Black professional firefighters came together in solidarity to fight for fair treatment within the Dept, equitable hiring practices, promotions, and access to leadership roles. Ensuring Black firefighters had the same opportunities as their white counterparts, the Vulcan Pioneers were forged from fire. Black firefighters often experienced isolation and hostility within predominantly white firehouses. This organization would provide a sense of community, mutual support, and a platform for addressing shared challenges. Individuals with a passion for community service aimed to encourage and support more Black individuals to join the firefighting profession, addressing the underrepresentation of Black firefighters in Newark.

Our journey is rooted in the belief that education, awareness, and action can make a difference and ensure that the fire department better represents the community it serves. Over the decades, we have been facing and still fighting the same issues as the 1950s. The difference now is that the population of Black firefighters, captains, and chiefs have grown in comparison due to work and advocacy of our predecessors. Due to their diligence and the continued service of present Vulcans we have become a trusted partner in promoting safety, protecting lives, and building a resilient community not only in Newark but with similar cities throughout the USA. The goal has always been hiring more Black and Brown Newarkers and advancing equity and fostering a supportive environment for Black and Brown professional firefighters through historically challenging issues.
